US Larvicides and Their Expanding Role in Vector Control

Larvicides are substances used to control mosquito and insect populations during their larval stage before they develop into adults. In the United States, larvicides are commonly applied in standing water sources such as ponds, drainage systems, marshes, stormwater basins, and irrigation channels. Their use has become an important part of integrated pest management programs focused on reducing disease-carrying insects.

Public health agencies often use larvicides to help limit the spread of mosquito-borne illnesses including West Nile virus, dengue, and other vector-related diseases. Different larvicides work through biological or chemical processes. Biological options may contain naturally occurring bacteria that target mosquito larvae without causing major harm to birds, fish, or humans when used correctly. Chemical larvicides may interrupt insect growth or affect the nervous system of larvae.
